It’s a late morning. My grandmother and I are sitting in the living room with cookbooks and recipe cards up to our elbows, frantically searching. With Thanksgiving only days away, we are finalizing the menu and making a list for needed items. However, there is a snag in the plan. The ancient recipe for bread dressing (stuffing) is missing.
Working from the memory of a 97 year old, we have checked and double checked all the places she would have placed the recipe. After two hours, we are recipeless and famished. We’ve confiscated some other long forgotten recipes, but not the golden goose of which we started this search for. Silently, we sit dumbfounded, me texting with my mother and deciding to wing it and grandma looking over recipes she found amongst the archives.
Let’s hope grandmas memory comes back while she’s putting the ingredients together, if not, we will have a new recipe. Let’s just hope its worthy of a do over.
